How to use Google Adsense in WordPress blog

Have you tried to earn some money on your blogging? Well, a lot of people do try. Some bloggers can earn a lot of money, others not so much. And I’m in the second group. But it doesn’t hurt to try to have some ads on your blog.

This small guide is to help you place Google Adsense ads in your WordPress blog hosted on your own domain. The easiest way is to go to the Appearance menu on the left and select Widgets. Here you add a new widget to the sidebar of the Text-type. Copy the code for the ad that you got in Google Adsense and past it in the new Text-widget. That’s it.

You can use one of the plugins found at WordPress.org. I haven’t tested any of them, so I can’t say how they are.

If you want to have full controll or just want to do it the hard way, then you edit the code your self. There are three temples you should consentrate on (found in Appearance – Editor). The files are archive.php, index.php and single.php.

At the top of each file, you will find a code similar to this:

1. <?php get_header(); ?>
3. <div id=”content” class=”narrowcolumn”>
5. <?php if (have_posts()) : ?>

You place your Google Adsense-code on  line 4 (remember that the number shall not be written to the php-file, it’s only for illustrations). This will place the ad at the top of the page. I usually place the add in a p-tag:

<p style=”text-align: center;”>[YOUR CODE HERE]</p>

I do this to center the ad in the blogpost and to give a bit of space around the ad.

You can also add the ad to the bottom of the page. Each of the three mentioned php-files have this code at the bottom:

<?php endif; ?>
<?php get_sidebar(); ?>
<?php get_footer(); ?>

And you see where you have to place the code. You can also put an ad between the post and the comment. To do this, you have to look for the following code at the bottom of the single.php file:

<?php comments_template(); ?>

The picture bellow shows you how it will look.

You can offcourse use ads from other associates-programs. remember that you can only use three Google Adsense units/page.

You have to test what placement gives you the best income. Try, test, fail and try again.

If you need more information on Google Adsense, you can take a look at ProBlogger.net. If that’s not enough for you, take a look at Amazon.com. The search for google adsense give you over 600 book titles. Also a relevant keyword in all this is AdWord.

I hope this was helpfull. If you have comments or experience you want to share, please feel free to do so.

I also found a YouTube-video of AdSense optimization where it talks about the placement of ads, well worth a look.

How to record video from Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii

I’ve made a lot of YouTube videos recorded from gameplay. And from time to time, I’ve been asked how I get so good quality on my videos. I will try to answer that in this post.

You probably already have a device for recording video; a camcorder, digital compact camera, cellphone or a DVD recorder.

When you record from Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo Wii, in most cases you will only be able to record in SD. But that is more than enough for putting the video up on YouTube.

I will go through the different method I’ve used to record video gameplay.

DVD recorder/TV-card

This is the best option if you want to record from Xbox 360, PS3, and the Nintendo Wii. If you have an internal TV-card or a USB-stick of some kind, you will get the records directly on your PC ready for editing. But I actually prefer my DVD recorder since I think that better visual quality. I have to copy the recording over to DVD and rip it on the PC. It’s a bit more work (not much though), and I think it’s worth it.

If you can, record from S-video instead of composite video. It will give you a much clearer picture. For some strange reasons, S-video is not enabled in the European Wii.

I have an “old” DV-camcorder. I’v mostly used this for record DS and PSP gameplay. And it works very well. If you record from the TV screen, it can result in flicker. The PSP-2000 have video out, but you can’t record gameplay from it since it only output gameplay in progressive scan (not interlaced). Tha’s why a camcorder will work very well for the PSP.

 To get a good and steady recording, use a tripod.

Many cellphones are able to record video, and many in VGA-resolution (640 x 480). Remember to hold the phone still. A shaky camera is not fun to watch on YouTube or anywhere else.

Digital compact camera

If you got a relative new camera, they make OK videoes. I got a 4 year old camera recording in 320 x 240 in MPEG-1. Well, it’s not good to watch.

Record in HD

There is actually one option that I know of which let you record in HD, the Hauppauge HD PVR. It will let you record in 1080i with component cables. That will give you a great video quality for you Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii recording. Well, Wii only support 480p, but the quality will be much better. This device will also let you record video from PSP in 480p.

When you have recorded your video, you use your prefered video editor to edit the video and make it ready for upload to YouTube.

 Compare different video sources

I made a video which will show you how the end result are when you compare the same video shot with a DV-camera, a cellphone and using a DVD-recorder.

OK, so this was not an in-depth guide or tutorial, but I hope it give you an idea of how you can record gamevideoes with good quality.

How to get more visitors to your blog

So you write a blog, but do you have any readers? How can you drive more traffic to your blog? When you spend time to write a blog, you want people to read it. Right? If you think you don’t have enough visitors or you want more, this small guide is for you.

I’ve been blogging for some years now and I have between 40-60 unique vistors everyday. And I think that is good, but it could always be better. There’s a lot of different tips out there on Internet. The tips I give, is what I have done to get more visitiors. If you have other tips, please leave a comment.

Choose a topic

You have to write about something. I’ve read that you shoud stick to a couple of topics. But I don’t know, I write about everything, and that seems to work just OK. But choose wisely what you want to write about. Write about things that people want to read about. Write about things that last forever, like this blogpost. People always need this information. And write about things that are up to date, like things that happens in the news.

Use paragraphs which makes it easy to read,and don’t write to much. People don’t read if you have too much text, I don’t anyway. But if you devide the text and have space, it’s easier to read.  Keep what you write interesting and if you write well, people will come back to your blog. Quality is good.

Ping your blog

Submit your URL to search engines. You chould be well covered if you only add your site with Google. A quick look at the statistics for my blog, about 96% of hits from search engines came from Google. You should also add your RSS-feed to Google Blog Search and Yahoo. You can also use ping-o-matic which pings a lot of different services. If you use WordPress like me, it will ping a lot of services automaticly when you publish a post.

You could also use services like Technorati and Feedburner (my Feedburner RSS-feed).

Use links

The web is build around linking. You click a link to get from one site to another. So you have to spread the link to your blog. If you have friends or family members who blog, have a list of each others blog with links in the sidebar. People will click on them.

Read other blogs and make comments. You will then be able to leave a link to your site, and the people who own that blog will probably check it out. I do anyway, so leave a comment and you get some traffic from me. And other people who read that blog might just click your link if they thought you made a great comment.

If you are a member of forums, make sure that you put your link in your signature.

When you write an article for your blog, make sure to find other relevant site that have the same topic and link to them. Because of a feature called pingback and trackback, the link to your post will often be posted as comment on the blog you link to.

But remember, do not spam.

Give you pictures a name

I’ve seen that I often do get traffic from Googles picture seach. So it’s actually wise to give the pictures you upload to your blog a real name. Instead of DSC_2494.JPG which is given by the camera, call it eating_hamburger_mcdonalds.jpg.

Tag your post

It will help you to tag your posts. It helps you and your readers to easy find things in a specific categories to read. It also helps search engines.

Make a good headline. It must describe what your post is about. A great headline will attract more readers, and will help them find what they look for when searching the Net. I hope my headline How to get more visitors to your blog was what brought you here.

Social networks

If you have a Twitter account [link to my profile], you can use that to inform your subscribers that you have posted something of interest. But don’t broadcast all your blogpost on Twitter. That will feel likes spam.

Or if you are on Facebook, you could use the statusbar to link to post that could be of interest for your friends.

Google Friend Connect

With Google Friend Connect visitors can become a member of your site. I installed it some weeks ago. But for me, it haven’t given me any traffic. But feel free to join my site.

Digg it

If you’ve written a great blogpost, like I did with this one, digg it. While I don’t get that much traffic from Digg.com, it do help. It’s one of the biggest news sites out there.

Closing commens

If you do some or all of the above, you will over time increase the traffic to you blog. I don’t say these are the best methods. But it’s the one that I have used and that works for me. I’ve found other sites that says much of the same.

Feel free to make a comment. If you have other and better tips to get more readers to our blogosphere, please write it down. If you add links in your comment, please do not add more than two since you will then end in the spam bin.

I hope this will help you to get more visitors to your own blog. Happy blogging!

Xbox 360: Backup your harddrive and memory unit

This is a small guide to how you can backup the content on your Xbox 360 harddrive and Memory Unit. This may be consider as a hack, since it’s not offical Microsoft products. But there are many legal reasons for doing this.

At the bottom of this post I have links to sites where I found the information I need to do, and there is also links to where you can buy the different gadgets/hardware you need. I recommand you to read my post and on the websites I have linked to. This will give you a good picture of what you need to do and how to do it.

WARNING! When you follow this guide (and the related links), you do it on your own risk. Things can go wrong. So be careful.

My reason for doing this, is that I bought the new 120GB on eBay without the transfer cable. So I couldn’t transfer all of my stuff from the 20GB to the 120GB drive. So I went to Divineo.cn and bought the 360 MiniSpy SATA Hard Drive Adapter. It’s easy to install in your PC (there is also a USB version of the device). You only need to find i a free SATA port and powerconnector (I think I used my last one).

It’s very important that you connect the device to the Xbox 360 drive as showed on the pictures. Any other way will brake you HDD, so do it right.

When you have connected everything (don’t hotswap the HDD), turn on your PC and start Xplorer360. If you get a message from Windows saying that you have to i format, initialize your HDD or something similar, DON’T DO IT. This will make your HDD unusable on Xbox 360. If you have a 120GB (like me), you need Xplorer360 extreme2 version that suppport this drive.

Selecet Drive, Open and Harddrive or Memcard.

You will will the see three partitions. Partition 0 is caching (I think), Partition 2 is for backward compatibility and Partition 3 is userdate (gamesave, music, etc.)

You will find a lot of folders. In Partition 3 under Content, you will find the profiles. To backup a folder or file, right-click and select Extract and save the files to your PC harddrive. If your need help, check this site: http://360.kingla.com/. This will help you identify which game is in the different folders.
When you have made backup of all the files you need; Turn of your PC, switch Xbox 360 drives and turn your PC on again. Then you you insert the backuped files.

For some reasons, my 120GB drive did not have Partition 2. I had to make a backup of Partition 2 on my 20GB and restore that on the 120GB drive. There is a option in Xplorer360 to do that.

To make a backup or ectract files from a Memory Unit, you do the same as with a harddrive. But you need Datel’s Transfer Kit to read the memory card. You have to install X360MemoryUnitDriversV1.2 so that Xplorer360 can read the Memory Unit, both the 64MB and the 512MB (I haven’t tested it with 256MB, but that should work to).

Legeal reasons for doing this

With most games, you can move your savefile from one Memory Unit to another or the HDD. But some gamefiles are locked to the drive your first saved it on. For me that was Viva Pinata and Perfect Dark Zero. [UPDATE] The Viva Pinata game save was reported broken, so it may not be possible to transfer locked gamesaves from one unit to another.

Hexic was on my 20GB, but not the new 120GB. With Xplorer360 I was able to extract that game from my 20GB and insert in on the 120GB. The same goes for Arcade games that usualy are on new Memory Units when you buy them. You can’t move this games on to your 360 HDD with your Xbox 360.

When you buy the 120GB drive in stores, you get a transfer cable that will make a backup of the 20GB. But not everything is backedup. From what I read, savefiles from Xbox 1 games will not be backed up, and people have had problems with music to. with the Xplorer360, you can backup everything.

So good luck with the backup. Remember, read everthing both one and two times, inlcuded the links below.

This links will help you do everything the right way:

Here is the links to where you can buy the different devices needed to make backups. I have listed different sites, so you can select one close to where you live or one that is cheaper than the other.

Alternative HDD reading devices. I have not tested these, but they should work fine as well (google it to find out more).
