“In this sequel to the best-selling video game of all time, take a unique journey to the dream world Subcon to save it’s people from the foul frog tyran, Wart.
Released in 1989, Super Mario Bros. 2 is a huge horizontally- and verticaly-scrolling platformer that offers complete freedom to explore while collecting power-ups, uprooting vegetables to throw at enemies, and seeking out hidden ‘Sub-space’ rooms.
Super Mario Bros. 2 was the first Mario title to give players control of not only heroic brothers but also Princess Toadstool (Peach and Toad, and gave each character their own special skills. It also featured the first appearances of many Mario series regulars, including Shy Guy and Birdo!”
NES – 1987 by Nintendo – racing/action – 1 player – 500 points
“It is the year 212 and Earth has been taken over by evil forces. As a lone motorcycle warrior, you must battle the invaders while racing from sector to sector in search of survivors. You are Earth’s last hope. You are Mach Rider!
In the main Fight Course mode, race through 10 levels of winding highway and take out the enemies using your machine guns or blocking manoeuvres. In Endurance Mode, pit your survival skills against the clcok, or try Solo Course for an enemy-free ride.
Mach Rider also includes a Design mode, enabling you to design your own cources. In this Virtual Console version you can also save your courser, which was not possible in the original NES version.”
Turbografx – 1992 by Hudson Soft – shooter – 1 player – 600 points
“Blazing Lazers is a vertical-scrolling shooter that was praised for surpassing the limitation of the hardware of it’s time. Players control the extraordinary firepower of their Gunhed Star Fighter to take on the Dark Squadron that has begun its invation of Earth. Collect power-ups to increase your ship’s battle strength to cut through enemies and defeat the bosses in all 9 areas.
Of course, as part of the “Soldiers” series, the game contains a good balance of fast-paced speed with catchy drum-prpelled background music. Couple that with the “Field Thunder” that can be used to destroy enemies in one fell swoop for the ultimate sense of satifaction! With its finely-tuned difficulty level, Blazing Lazers is a shooting game that anyone can enjoy!”
