Virtual Console games – Europe – Friday 24th August

Yesterday, Friday August 24th, Europe got three new games to download on VC on our Wii.

Lunar Pool
NES – 1991 by D4 Enterprise – sport/pool – 1-2 players – 500 points

Lunar Pool reinvents the popular game of pool with a unique and futuristic flair. THe rules are simple – all you need to do is hit the white cue ball with your cue, causing it to hit the other numbered balls and make them go into the pockets.

You can enjoy nearly unlimited gameplay with 30 tables, 2 different ball arrangements and the ability to change the degree of friction on the table. You can play against the computer or another human player, so try challenging someone once you’ve got the hang of the game.

Turbografx – 1990 by Hudson Soft – action RPG – 1 player – 600 points

You are a brave boy who sets off on a journey to rescue the kidnapped princess and reclaim the 8 medallions that were stolen by the evil demon, Dirth.

In this action role-playing game, you’ll need to rely on your magic compass and gather information to find entrances to labyrinths, and defeat the bosses in them. Travel across land and sea, under the earth and even through the sky on your quest to recover the medallions.

Solve puzzels, avoid traps, move block and destroy walls to uncover secret rooms in the labyrinths. Carefully use your map to uncover hidden treasures and powerful equipment. With a save function, the right difficulty level and a system that doesn’t use experience points, this is a true RPG that anyone can enjoy.

Wrekcing Crew
NES – 1987 by Nintendo – action – 1-2 players – 500 points

In NES classic Wrecking Crew, Mario swaps his plumber’s cap for a haard hat as he takes on the unque role of a demolition engineer!

Your aim is to demolish every obstacle in each enemy-infested level, while working out the most destrucive route through the networks of ladders and scaffolds.

Wrecking Crew was part of the NES “Programmable Series” so it also includes a mode for designing your own levels. This Virtual Console version also features the ability to save your creations, which was not possible in the original version.

PS3: Folding@home update

The Folding@home on Playstation 3 is getting an update. Here’s some quote from

We are all very excited here for the release of the new Folding@home (FAH) client for the PS3! This latest update addresses issues in two major areas: user requests and improving the accuracy of the core that we have running on the SPU. In addition, we totally revised the rendering engine for the molecules and added a more sophisticated display format, which is closer to the imagery you find in biology textbooks. This actually required a protocol change and the protein needs to be described in much more detail from Stanford University’s side of things.

Another really cool feature that was also requested by the FAH community is the support of PSP Remote Play. In this latest version we enabled this feature so you can now access FAH remotely from your PSP (that you already own, since it’s such a cool little gadget) which is an awesome combination since the CELL processor is actually doing the Folding job, but the PSP fully controls the UI so you can carry it around with you.

Paramount and DreamWorks Animation Each Declare Exclusive Support for HD DVD

Movies Distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment Including Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Animation SKG, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films to be Released Exclusively in HD DVD

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA and VIA.B) and DreamWorks Animation SKG (NYSE: DWA), each announced today that they will exclusively support the next-generation HD DVD format on a worldwide basis. The exclusive HD DVD commitment will include all movies distributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, as well as movies from DreamWorks Animation, which are distributed exclusively by Paramount Home Entertainment.

The companies each said that the decision to distribute exclusively in the HD DVD format resulted from an extensive evaluation of current market offerings, which confirmed the clear benefits of HD DVD, particularly its market-ready technology and lower manufacturing costs. Paramount Home Entertainment will launch its exclusive HD DVD program with the release of the blockbuster comedy hit “Blades of Glory” on August 28th and follow with two of the biggest grossing movies of the year “Transformers” and “Shrek the Third”. These three titles alone represent more than $1.5 billion in box office ticket sales worldwide.

“The combination of Paramount and DreamWorks Animation brings a critical mass of current box office hits to consumers with a line-up of live action and animated films that are perfect for HD DVD,” stated Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, which is currently the leading studio in domestic box office. “Part of our vision is to aggressively extend our movies beyond the theater, and deliver the quality and features that appeal to our audience. I believe HD DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount.”

“We decided to release “Shrek the Third” and other DreamWorks Animation titles exclusively on HD DVD because we believe it is the best format to bring high quality home entertainment to a key segment of our audience — families,” stated DreamWorks Animation CEO, Jeffrey Katzenberg. “We believe the combination of this year’s low-priced HD DVD players and the commitment to release a significant number of hit titles in the fall makes HD DVD the best way to view movies at home.”

With the rapid increase of HD TV screens in households, and audiences wanting to enjoy the total entertainment experience, HD DVD has emerged as the most affordable way for consumers to watch their movies in high definition. In addition to pristine quality, HD DVD also offers consumers the chance to personalize the movie-watching experience, to interact with their movies and even to connect with a community of other fans.

Paramount Home Entertainment will issue new releases day and date as well as catalog titles exclusively on HD DVD. Today’s announcement does not include films directed by Steven Spielberg as his films are not exclusive to either format.

Time-lapse is a very cool videoeffect and it’s not hard to do either. If your videocamera doesn’t have a time-lapse function, you can film normaly and on your computer, you can extract 1 frame every second (like I did) and then set all these frames together again and play it back at 30 fps. Simple, but effective.
