Caligari trueSpace supports end

Yesterday I got a mail from Caligari saying that i will see “reduction or elimination of services offered for trueSpace“. Microsoft bought Caligari last year and made the 3D software trueSpace 7.6 freeware and downloadable for all. trueSpace started its life on the Amiga as Caligari 1 and has a lifeline which is over 20 years, and looks like it’s draw to an end.

Here is the complete Letter from the founder:

Dear Caligari customer,

You may have heard that Microsoft Corporation, reacting to difficult business conditions, has been evaluating many of the products it produces and making the difficult decision to reduce investment in certain areas.

It is with regret that I have to tell you that trueSpace is one of the products affected. As a consequence, you will see reduction or elimination of services offered for trueSpace. For example, there will be no phone or email support offered for trueSpace by Microsoft, and our web site may also be affected. While the dates are not absolutely fixed, some services and contacts may come to an end as early as Friday May 22nd 2009, while others will continue as long as possible with no firm cutoff date available yet.

While we are working to minimize negative impact for the community, here are some things you may want to plan for in near future:

  1.  For those who have purchased and paid for Caligari products, download a copy of all purchased software from the repeat downloads area.
    Please log in with your username and password at:
    http://cart1.caligari.com/ebuy2/enterdownloads.asp
    If you have forgotten either your user name or password, please visit:
    http://cart1.caligari.com/forms/memberform.aspEnsure you keep the copies and information in a safe place, as they may not be available for download again. Be sure you also have a copy of all required serial numbers, as there will be no support staff to assist you after a certain date.
  2. For those who have downloaded trueSpace7.6 since it became free, if you do not already have a copy of the installer kept on your hard drive or on CD / DVD, you may wish to download the trueSpace7.6 installer and keep a copy in a safe place.
    Please log in with your username and password at:
    http://cart1.caligari.com/web/Truespacemainreg.aspx
    If you have forgotten either your user name or password, please visit:
    http://cart1.caligari.com/forms/tsmemberform.asp
  3. Download a copy of any training that you wish to keep from our main website.
  4. Download any useful plug-ins you wish to keep from the forums.
  5. Download any useful information, training, tips etc from the forums that you wish to keep.
  6. Contact any Caligari staff or forum users who you wish to keep in touch with, and arrange to have an alternative email address to contact them.

As a community you may decide to set up a new forum or meeting place. Please use the existing forums to announce the location of that new meeting space, and we will also strive to put that information onto our main website. I personally plan to visit any such meeting place to keep in touch with you and hear about your new plans.

All of us here in the Caligari team would like to thank everyone in our community for your long-standing support of trueSpace and Caligari. Our community – that is, all of you – were truly one of our best assets, and you have created incredible work, and we hope you will continue on to do even more amazing things.

I personally want to thank all of the Caligari staff for their amazing contribution to development of trueSpace and building of this community. During 25 years of trueSpace history the product made a difference in lives of many people and the world is a better place for it.

How to use Google Adsense in WordPress blog

google_adsense_logo

Have you tried to earn some money on your blogging? Well, a lot of people do try. Some bloggers can earn a lot of money, others not so much. And I’m in the second group. But it doesn’t hurt to try to have some ads on your blog.

This small guide is to help you place Google Adsense ads in your WordPress blog hosted on your own domain. The easiest way is to go to the Appearance menu on the left and select Widgets. Here you add a new widget to the sidebar of the Text-type. Copy the code for the ad that you got in Google Adsense and past it in the new Text-widget. That’s it.

You can use one of the plugins found at WordPress.org. I haven’t tested any of them, so I can’t say how they are.

If you want to have full controll or just want to do it the hard way, then you edit the code your self. There are three temples you should consentrate on (found in Appearance – Editor). The files are archive.php, index.php and single.php.

At the top of each file, you will find a code similar to this:

1. <?php get_header(); ?>
2.
3. <div id=”content” class=”narrowcolumn”>
4. [YOUR CODE HERE]
5. <?php if (have_posts()) : ?>

You place your Google Adsense-code on  line 4 (remember that the number shall not be written to the php-file, it’s only for illustrations). This will place the ad at the top of the page. I usually place the add in a p-tag:

<p style=”text-align: center;”>[YOUR CODE HERE]</p>

I do this to center the ad in the blogpost and to give a bit of space around the ad.

reklame_topp

You can also add the ad to the bottom of the page. Each of the three mentioned php-files have this code at the bottom:

<?php endif; ?>
[YOUR CODE HERE]
</div>
<?php get_sidebar(); ?>
<?php get_footer(); ?>

And you see where you have to place the code. You can also put an ad between the post and the comment. To do this, you have to look for the following code at the bottom of the single.php file:

</div>
[YOUR CODE HERE]
<?php comments_template(); ?>

The picture bellow shows you how it will look.

reklame_post_kommentar

You can offcourse use ads from other associates-programs. remember that you can only use three Google Adsense units/page.

You have to test what placement gives you the best income. Try, test, fail and try again.

If you need more information on Google Adsense, you can take a look at ProBlogger.net. If that’s not enough for you, take a look at Amazon.com. The search for google adsense give you over 600 book titles. Also a relevant keyword in all this is AdWord.

I hope this was helpfull. If you have comments or experience you want to share, please feel free to do so.

I also found a YouTube-video of AdSense optimization where it talks about the placement of ads, well worth a look.

How to get more visitors to your blog

Filed under: blog,internet,PC — Tags: , , , — technofranki @ 05:13

blog_statistics_graph

So you write a blog, but do you have any readers? How can you drive more traffic to your blog? When you spend time to write a blog, you want people to read it. Right? If you think you don’t have enough visitors or you want more, this small guide is for you.

I’ve been blogging for some years now and I have between 40-60 unique vistors everyday. And I think that is good, but it could always be better. There’s a lot of different tips out there on Internet. The tips I give, is what I have done to get more visitiors. If you have other tips, please leave a comment.

Choose a topic

You have to write about something. I’ve read that you shoud stick to a couple of topics. But I don’t know, I write about everything, and that seems to work just OK. But choose wisely what you want to write about. Write about things that people want to read about. Write about things that last forever, like this blogpost. People always need this information. And write about things that are up to date, like things that happens in the news.

Use paragraphs which makes it easy to read,and don’t write to much. People don’t read if you have too much text, I don’t anyway. But if you devide the text and have space, it’s easier to read.  Keep what you write interesting and if you write well, people will come back to your blog. Quality is good.

Ping your blog

Submit your URL to search engines. You chould be well covered if you only add your site with Google. A quick look at the statistics for my blog, about 96% of hits from search engines came from Google. You should also add your RSS-feed to Google Blog Search and Yahoo. You can also use ping-o-matic which pings a lot of different services. If you use WordPress like me, it will ping a lot of services automaticly when you publish a post.

You could also use services like Technorati and Feedburner (my Feedburner RSS-feed).

Use links

The web is build around linking. You click a link to get from one site to another. So you have to spread the link to your blog. If you have friends or family members who blog, have a list of each others blog with links in the sidebar. People will click on them.

Read other blogs and make comments. You will then be able to leave a link to your site, and the people who own that blog will probably check it out. I do anyway, so leave a comment and you get some traffic from me. And other people who read that blog might just click your link if they thought you made a great comment.

If you are a member of forums, make sure that you put your link in your signature.

When you write an article for your blog, make sure to find other relevant site that have the same topic and link to them. Because of a feature called pingback and trackback, the link to your post will often be posted as comment on the blog you link to.

But remember, do not spam.

Give you pictures a name

I’ve seen that I often do get traffic from Googles picture seach. So it’s actually wise to give the pictures you upload to your blog a real name. Instead of DSC_2494.JPG which is given by the camera, call it eating_hamburger_mcdonalds.jpg.

Tag your post

It will help you to tag your posts. It helps you and your readers to easy find things in a specific categories to read. It also helps search engines.

Headline

Make a good headline. It must describe what your post is about. A great headline will attract more readers, and will help them find what they look for when searching the Net. I hope my headline How to get more visitors to your blog was what brought you here.

Social networks

If you have a Twitter account [link to my profile], you can use that to inform your subscribers that you have posted something of interest. But don’t broadcast all your blogpost on Twitter. That will feel likes spam.

Or if you are on Facebook, you could use the statusbar to link to post that could be of interest for your friends.

Google Friend Connect

With Google Friend Connect visitors can become a member of your site. I installed it some weeks ago. But for me, it haven’t given me any traffic. But feel free to join my site.

Digg it

If you’ve written a great blogpost, like I did with this one, digg it. While I don’t get that much traffic from Digg.com, it do help. It’s one of the biggest news sites out there.

Closing commens

If you do some or all of the above, you will over time increase the traffic to you blog. I don’t say these are the best methods. But it’s the one that I have used and that works for me. I’ve found other sites that says much of the same.

Feel free to make a comment. If you have other and better tips to get more readers to our blogosphere, please write it down. If you add links in your comment, please do not add more than two since you will then end in the spam bin.

I hope this will help you to get more visitors to your own blog. Happy blogging!

WordPress ad rotator widget

Filed under: blog,internet — Tags: , — technofranki @ 19:44

I wanted to find a way to show random content on the sidebar of my blog. I have ads from Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk and Play-Asia.com and wanted to show different content like best DVDs, best games and so on with out having to have a lot of ads down the page.

After some search on the net, I fond a great plug-in that do show random HTML content. I found Ad Rotator  for use with WordPress on kpumuk.info. It’s as easy as downloading the file and install it on your server, just follow the included instructions.

On the widget page on your blog, you add Ad Rotator like any other widget. Just copy & past the reguired HTML code and seperate it with <!–more–> for the next chunk of HTML-code. It works like a charme. And it can also be used to show random content like pictures and banner, or text for that matter, not only ads.

Norwegian broadcaster have their own torrent-tracker

Filed under: internet,TV — Tags: , , , — technofranki @ 21:49

Over the last year, NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) in Norway have tested the use of bittorrent as a distribution method. It have been successfull. They have now set up their own tracker for their own content. Which is geat. This is internet and public service TV at its best.

They have added the show “Der ingen skulle tru at nokon kunne bu” which you can download from NRKbeta.no, and I quote:

The first show we’re putting on our new tracker is a very popular television series about people living in remote places in Norway. It features fascinating people and spectacular scenery. We have provided all the Norwegian subtitle files and if people want to fansub any of the episodes we’re more than happy to let you do that. Please let us know in the comments and we’ll link to your translations.

The video files are in MP4 with a resolution of 1024×576 (full widescreen PAL) and DRM free. The download comes with Norwegian subtitles, but after reading the comments on the site, fans already translate them into English.

So if you want to se more of Norway, and nice remote places, go and download. It’s not everyday you see legal and torrent in the same sentence.

What do you do when Internet is down?

Filed under: internet,PC — technofranki @ 18:44

What do you do when Internet is down for a shorter period? To lose Internet connection, is almost the same as losing electricy. You hardly notice how much you use it, until you lose it.

The first thing you check is that the cable is in place, then that the router is on, and you turn it off, wait a couple of minutes, turn it on again…. and still no Internet.

So you turn on your Xbox, but you can’t play online. You can’t check your mail, pay bills, buy movies or music, or blogg about that you have lost your Internet connection. If you are real desperate, you get out with your laptop to search for open Wi-Fi spots.

I think you will recognice this description, so here’s my point with this blogpost. South Park had this subject in the episode “Over Logging” (ep. 12.6). Internet is down in South Park. There is no connection, and they can’t find any other resident in South Park with an Internet connection either. Rumors has it that there may be Internet connection in California.

Go to SouthParkStudios.com to watch this episode for free, and it’s legal too.
